We are now
accepting registrations for Maths Let’s Do It sessions for 2009. Maths Let’s Do
It is a Mathematical Association of South Australia initiative that directly
targets year 7 and 8 students who like maths and aims to encourage their
interest. The session will involve students working collaboratively to solve
problems in a fun, supported, challenging atmosphere. Qualified teachers will
lead the sessions. Session notes will be available for participating schools so
that activities can be trialled in your own school.
Bookings are essential.
On acceptance of your booking, you will be emailed an information sheet and
consent form for distribution to your students.
Please note
that only registered students who have been confirmed through the MASA office
may attend. To register students, please contact the Mathematical
Association of South Australia’s office on 8362 4332 or by email masamail@internode.on.net.
There is a limit of 12 students per school. A responsible adult from each school
will need to attend with your group. This can be a parent or a teacher.
Quiz Night
Each year a Quiz Night is organised for
students. This is usually in August, coinciding with National Mathematics Week.
Students (in teams of four) compete with teams from other schools and class
mates for fun and cash prizes.
Questions are in sets of General Knowledge and Mathematical content. Calculators
may be used.
There are two
divisions: Seniors (Year 11-12) and Juniors (Year 8 -10).
Prizes are awarded in each division for Best Overall, Best Mathematics and Best
General Knowledge.

The Schools
Mathematics Competition (SMC) is organised by MASA and sponsored by the "Society
of Petroleum Engineers".
The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) is an international
technical/professional organisation dedicated to the advancement of technology
associated with the recovery of energy resources from wellbores. The South
Australian section of the SPE sponsors the South Australian School Mathematics
Competition as part of its commitment to the education of young people and to
raise their awareness of the Society's vocation, the profession of Petroleum
Engineer. The SPE considers that a career as a Petroleum Engineer offers
exciting opportunities to work throughout the world in one of the many facets of
the Oil and Gas Industry.
Divisions:
Junior: Up to
Year 8
Intermediate: Years 9,10
Senior: Years 11,12,13
The aim of the
competition is to encourage interested and motivated students to enjoy the
challenge of non-standard problems. While some of the questions require extended
knowledge and responses, the present format of the papers aims to give a wide
range of students the opportunity to achieve some success.
Each year
approx. 2000 students sit for the SMC.
